In Wake When Some Vile Thing is Nearby, Goble depicts a mysterious scene featuring a figure, often a maiden or fairy-like character, who lies in a seemingly enchanted sleep. She is surrounded by a lush, dreamlike forest filled with twisting vines, dense foliage, and shadowed recesses, creating an atmosphere thick with both tranquility and tension. The “vile thing” suggested by the title may lurk just out of sight, its presence sensed but unseen, enhancing the sense of suspense and intrigue.
